Evaluation of mathematics, ICT and technology 2023-2024 (EVALMIT)

The Research Council evaluates Norwegian research and higher education to promote quality, relevance and efficiency in research.

Since 2023, we have conducted this evaluation, and on 7 April 2025 we published the national report from the evaluation.

The evaluation aims to examine how Norwegian mathematical, ICT and technological research meets its goals, what kind of conditions the research has, and how relevant it is to important areas of society.

The evaluation was conducted at three levels:

  • First, 248 research groups were evaluated in 15 international expert panels divided by subject/discipline and across sectors (March–May 2024).
  • Then, the administrative units that own the research groups (56 registered units), which are the main evaluation object in EVALMIT, were evaluated in five sector-specific evaluation committees (April–December 2024).
  • Finally, 7 international experts including the leaders of the five evaluation committees eventually formed a national committee that prepared the national EVALMIT report (December 2024-February 2025).

The way forward

The Research Council of Norway will use the recommendations from the evaluation both in developing instruments for financing and in advising the ministries.

Follow-up of the evaluation

The evaluation also provides advice to the institutions on how they can improve the quality of their research. Each individual institution will be responsible for following up on the recommendations that apply to their own institution.
